Mike Spears has published an excellent new book on an under-researched area of Great Lakes Maritime History. He has taken all the marine news from the Detroit papers from 1836/37 and excerpted them into a wonderful book with period illustrations. This book represents the only published source for information about this early period of Lake history and shows nearly all the vessels that traveled the western Lakes in the is period. The book is well worth having for anyone interested in the earliest period of commercial navigation on the Lakes.
