The Russel Island wreck was identified as a mid 1850s Mackinaw boat, probably built at Collingwood, by Paul Hundley, an archeologist from Texas A&M. The ID was made in 1981 from period pottery, china and metal tools found among the wreck as well as making a hull reconstruction from the original timbers at the Texas A&M hull reconstruction lab. Swayze does not list Mackinaw boats and other small unregistered watercraft in his database.
